Marilyn Monroe writings to be released this fall

Farrar, Straus & Giroux announced Tuesday that "Fragments" would come out in October. Editor Courtney Hodell said the book would include poems, photographs, reflections on third husband Arthur Millerand other men in Monroe's life, and references to works by Samuel Beckett, James Joyce and numerous other authors.

"I think the book will show that she was a really thoughtful person with a real interior life," Hodell said. "She was a great reader and someone with real writing flair. There are fragments of poetry that are really quite beautiful, lines that stop you in your tracks."

The book features a long essay about Monroe's first husband, James Dougherty; notes about acting and the roles she was working on; lists of resolutions and a letter to acting coach Lee Strasberg. Monroe wrote on everything from spiral bound notebooks to stationery from theWaldorf Astoria.

The writings date from 1943, when Monroe was a teenager, to near the end of her life. Monroe was found dead in her Los Angeles home in 1962 at age 36, her death ruled a probable suicide, although theories of murder have proliferated.

Hodell said there were passages by Monroe that "make her seem suicidal," but declined to say what years the passages were written. Hodell also declined to say whether Monroe referred to Joe DiMaggio, her second of three husbands, or President John F. Kennedy, with whom she was widely rumored to have had an affair. But Hodell did say that "there's stuff about all of her relationships here."

The book was commissioned by Anna Strasberg, who manages Monroe's estate and is Lee Strasberg's widow.

'Real Housewives of New Jersey' remain divided

Danielle Staub

"I think in the first season, it caught me off guard," said Staub. "I thought at least one of them was truly being a friend to me, whereas as this season pans out, I realize that's not the case."

Staub adds that this season, which premieres May 3 at 10 p.m. EDT, she's "not going to be anyone's patsy. I think the world will be just as interested in me as a single person as they will be in them as a group."

Staub, a single 47-year-old mother of two daughters, continues to be on one side of the Jersey barrier opposite sisters Dina and Caroline Manzo, their sister-in-law Jacqueline Laurita and family friend Teresa Giudice, who infamously savaged a table at a restaurant in last season's finale when the women confronted Staub about her alleged criminal past.

"I don't have any regrets," acknowledged Giudice. "As you saw throughout the show, she did a lot of things to me, and I kept my mouth shut, so it was like a buildup, and then finally, I couldn't take her no more. She did a lot of things off the scene and on the scene that you guys saw that got me to that boiling point, and then I was just done with her."

Last year's table-flipping finale drew over 4.6 million viewers. The polarizing suburban drama served as a shot of Botox for Bravo's aging "Real Housewives" franchise. Viewers were drawn to the less aspirational, more genuine antics of the Jersey gals over the tanned original Orange County brood, hot-to-trot New York City ladies and sassy Atlanta denizens.

Other equally unapologetic Jersey-set reality series have since followed suit, including MTV's "Jersey Shore," Style's "Jerseylicious" and Oxygen's upcoming "Jersey Couture," which stars an Italian-American family who run a dress shop. "The Real Housewives of New Jersey" cast and crew, however, dismiss any comparisons to other made-in-Jersey reality TV shows.

"What's amazing to me about this second season is it's so much about family," said Andy Cohen, Bravo's senior vice president of original programming and development who also hosts "The Real Housewives" reunion shows. "Each of these women are mothers, and they all have different, intense and interesting things going on with their children this season."

Of course, there's still female trouble. Unlike the other three "Real Housewives" editions, where the casts do lunch as often as they quibble, the Jersey women are clearly housewives divided, making this second entry in the popular Bravo franchise feel more like "The Real Housewives — and Danielle Staub — of New Jersey."

"Before the show, we weren't really friendly with her," admitted Dina. "It was the four of us who knew each other. Danielle was the one who came along that none of us knew. It's pretty much the same. It's like a working relationship. Obviously, we're contracted to do a show with her. We did interact during filming, but since then I haven't run into her."

The reality TV drama entered the courtroom earlier this year when Ashley Holmes, Laurita's 19-year-old daughter, was found guilty in a municipal court on one count of assault and ordered to pay a fine after Staub complained that Holmes ripped out a clump of her hair extensions during an altercation, which will apparently factor into the second season.

"It was very painful, really unexpected and much undeserved," said Staub. "Police showed up, charges were made and it was up to the state. I wasn't going to allow anyone to put their hands on me without thinking there were repercussions because I'm not garbage. I'm actually a good person who deserves to go where I want to go without people attacking me."

Staub, who was accused of being an escort and drug addict in the first season, said she will tell her side in her upcoming autobiography, "The Naked Truth: The Real Story Behind the Real Housewife of New Jersey — In Her Own Words." Despite Staub's rocky relationship with her "Real Housewives" cast members, she'd "absolutely" sign up for a third season.

"It's not about them," said Staub. "My life is never going to be about them."

'Peanuts' gang sold to Joe Boxer owner for $175M

Newspaper publisher E.W. Scripps Co. is selling licensing rights forSnoopy, Charlie Brown and the rest of the "Peanuts" gang to Iconix Brand Group Inc., the licensing company that owns Joe Boxer and London Fog.

The family of the late "Peanuts" creator Charles Schulz will also own part of the business too, giving it more control of and money from the comic strip's legacy.

Heirs say the deal announced Tuesday for for the 60-year-old comic strip is what the artist would have wanted. Schulz worked for decades to win back the rights to his work, which many other artists like himself sold to appear in print.

Scripps will sell its licensing unit, which also represents characters such as Dilbert and Raggedy Ann and Andy, to Iconix for $175 million. The bulk of revenue generated by United Media Licensing comes from the "Peanuts" franchise.

Iconix will form a partnership with Schulz' family, who will receive 20 percent ownership in the unit that owns "Peanuts" and pay that percentage of the sale price.

Craig Schulz, one of the late artists' five children, said the family is relieved to win an ownership interest.

At the time of his death in 2000, Schulz had approval over all business deals and the use of art, which his family maintains. But now, they can craft their own proposals and shape the legacy of "Peanuts," said Barbara Gallagher, a lawyer for the Schulz family.

The family could potentially earn more money as well, and already earns a "significant revenue stream" each year from "Peanuts."

Scripps first brought the strip to market in 1950 and owned the rights.

"They were simply like an actor in a play," Schulz said of cartoonists from the era. "You did your part and everything else you had to give up totally, and that's the way the world was."

His father fought for years to get the rights back, even threatening to quit until he was given more business and artistic control, said the younger Schulz from Santa Rosa, Calif., where the family's business is run.

By the time Schulz retired in 1999, "Peanuts" was in more than 2,600 papers around the world and its cast of characters appeared everywhere, from T-shirts to greeting cards and sno-cone machines.

No new comics have been drawn for a decade, according to Schulz' wishes, but the licensing business is alive and well. Some 20,000 new products are approved each year in more than 40 countries. The business has more than 1,200 licensing agreements and relationships with companies and retailers such as Warner Bros.,Old Navy, CVS, MetLife Inc. and Hallmark Co.

The unit's licensed merchandise has annual sales of more than $2 billion, but the owners of the licenses receive a fraction of that. In 2009, revenue of the unit fell 10 percent to nearly $92 million. That figure includes United Media's syndication operations, which Scripps will still own, meaning it will still syndicate comic strips and editorial features.

Scripps said the cash deal will close by the end of the second quarter.

Iconix said it expects "Peanuts" to generate about $75 million in annual royalty revenue and noted an existing revenue split with the Schulz family will remain, separate from the new 20 percent arrangement. Iconix, based in New York, owns and licenses brands such Candie's, Starter, Mudd and many others, to retailers, wholesalers and suppliers.

Iconix CEO Neil Cole said the purchase moves the company away from being focused solely on fashion into new realms that include theme parks, media and financial institutions. The family also hopes to pair up the franchise with Iconix's fashion brands.

Insurer MetLife has used Snoopy as its worldwide icon since 1985. Spokesman John Calagna declined to say how much the company pays for the rights and said the new deal would have no effect on its plans.

"Idol" Adam Lambert announces first solo tour

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – "American Idol" runner-up Adam Lambert will embark on his first solo tour in June, playing 19 U.S. dates and bringing fellow "Idol" rocker Allison Iraheta along for part of the ride.

Lambert, 28, considered one of the most exciting contestants not to win the top-rated TV singing contest, will kick off his "Glam Nation" tour on June 4 in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, his record company said on Tuesday.

The gay, glam rocker with a penchant for eyeliner and black nail polish has sold 600,000 copies of his debut album "For Your Entertainment". His single "Whataya Want From Me" has been a Top 10 hit in the U.S., Australia, Japan, Sweden, Singaporeand Finland.

Lambert finished second on "American Idol" to Kris Allen in 2009 but grabbed media attention with a sexually-charged live performance at the American Music Awards in November that was later edited, raising questions about differing media attitudes to gay and heterosexual performers.

"Adam is one of the most exciting artists I have ever seen live on stage," said Simon Fuller, Lambert's manager and the creator of "American Idol".

"As great as he has been on the 'American Idols Live' summer shows, this tour is going to surpass anything he's done before," Fuller said in a statement.

Iraheta, 18, the flame-haired rock singer who finished third on "American Idol" last year, will open for Lambert on some dates, with 25 year-old guitarist Orianthi warming up the crowds on most of the tour.

New movie shapes life of hairdresser Vidal Sassoon

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Hairdressing pioneer Vidal Sassoon rose to fame nearly 50 years ago with his geometric cuts and business savvy that created a global brand, but he says hairdressers still don't get the respect they deserve.

Sassoon is dubbed a pioneer by many for not only coming up with so-called wash and wear looks -- liberating many women from weekly salon trips to have their hair done -- but also creating a multimillion dollar line of hair care products.

The 82-year-old's life and career are depicted in "Vidal Sassoon The Movie," produced by Michael Gordon, founder of the Bumble and Bumble hair salons, which had its world premiere and is showing at this week'sTribeca Film Festival.

But while the U.S. hair care market is worth more than $8 billion and the country's 80,000 salons generate $16 billion annually, according to industry data, Sassoon said some people still viewed hairdressing as "a craft for creeps and freaks."

"Hairdressing in general hasn't been given the kudos it deserves," Sassoon, who was unable to appear at the festival after spending several weeks in hospital with pneumonia, told Reuters in a phone interview. "It's not recognized by enough people as a worthy craft."

"If you get hold of a head of hair on somebody you've never seen before, cut beautiful shapes, cut beautiful architectural angles and she walks out looking so different -- I think that's masterful," he said.

The film tells of Sassoon's rise from an impoverished childhood as a Jewish boy in London, to fighting for Israel against the Arabs, to forging his career as a hairdresser, building his company and becoming a television star.

He was born in Britain and spent several years in an orphanage as a young boy after his father left his family. He left school at age 14 and began to train as a hairdresser after his mother "had a vision" that her son should be cutting hair.

He opened his first salon at 26 and decided that if he could not change hairdressing within a decade he would quit and become an architect. Sassoon said he drew inspiration for hair cuts from great buildings around the world.

A big Chelsea football fan, Sassoon said that after working in the salon all week, watching his team play every weekend was "better than a psychiatrist's couch."

Sassoon, who now lives in the United States with his second wife and had four children in his first marriage, came up with the idea of selling hair care products to "make money while people sleep."

He sold the rights to his name and hair care products to U.S. health and beauty supply company Richardson-Vicks in 1983. The company is now owned by Procter & Gamble.

"I just consider being one of the luckiest people in the sense that creativity came to me and it flowed," said Sassoon.

Olympic federations to review TV revenue share

DUBAI (Reuters) – The 28 Summer Olympic sports federations, feeling the squeeze from the global economic downturn, decided on Tuesday to review the way broadcast revenue from the Games are distributed.

Federations taking part in London 2012 will share around $375 million from the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) TV deals.

Athletics will get the biggest share with $35 million. Soccer, swimming, basketball, cycling, gymnastics, tennis and volleyball, ranked in group two, can expect about $18 million each.

Sports chiefs voted on Tuesday to alter the system after the London Olympics to make it more representative but some federations had argued that a revision was needed immediately.

The IOC distributes the broadcast revenue from Olympic TV deals to the 28 sports, placed in four groups. Federations in the two lower groups are allocated $13 million and $11 million respectively.

"The share of TV revenues ... needs to be reviewed now, not in two years," international swimming federation(FINA) chief Julio Maglione told a meeting of the 28 sports.

MARKET APPEAL

"The current distribution does not reflect ... the changes in market appeal and changes in sport."

Swimming is among the most watched sports at the Games.

Boxing chief Ching Kuo Wu had also asked for an immediate revision, as did handball and table tennisbosses.

The IOC has secured a record total of $3.8 billion from broadcast rights for the Winter Olympics in Vancouver that took place in February and for London 2012.

The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and world soccer's governing body (FIFA) agreed to give $20 million from the combined TV funds they will receive for the London Games to the other federations.

"I said last year that if our finances are comfortable we would give that (windfall) to the other federations," FIFA chief Sepp Blatter told Reuters. "That is exactly what we will do now."

Federations will receive more money for London 2012 compared to Beijing 2008 as there are only 26 sports on the program instead of 28.

Softball and baseball were voted off for London, with golf and rugby replacing them at the 2016 Olympics.

Dancing Girls and Superstars at the "Iron Man 2" Premiere

Dancing Girls and Superstars at the "Iron Man 2" Premiere

Los Angeles – A bevy of beauties hit the glittery red-carpet premiere of "Iron Man 2" at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood on Monday, April 26, and they weren't even the much-anticipated film's female leads. No, these were dancing girls, decked out in skimpy red bikinis and knee-high red boots. In a twist from the normal red-carpet walk, the girls danced on a curtained stage, then director Jon Favreau announced the star-studded cast one by one, with the fans' screams hitting a crescendo as each appeared from behind the curtain.

Gwyneth Paltrow led the dazzling parade of actresses that make "Iron Man 2" much more than just a Marvel comic-book flick. Scarlett Johansson, Leslie Bibb, Anya Monzikova, Olivia Munn, and Helena Mattsson rounded out the female eye candy that populates this sequel all about Tony Stark and his alter ego Iron Man.

At an earlier press conference for the film, Paltrow explained exactly why the women in "Iron Man 2" are so special.

"It's a very smart decision actually to have women who are capable and intelligent in the film, because it appeals to women. So it's not only a film for 15-year-old boys," she explained. "It's a film that can relate to a lot of people on a lot of levels and a lot of my girlfriends like it because of the romance."

Paltrow's character is in a romance with the movie's hero Tony Stark, who is played by Robert Downey Jr. He told reporters that he is certainly happier being the star of a huge movie franchise rather than a drug-addicted criminal, which he once was. Downey, who spent more than a year in jail because of his actions while under the influence, laughed and said, "I'm in a great spot. I think I'm fortunate too because I've kind of had two or three or seven lives with different perceptions of me and my status or whatever. It's just been a really nice time right now."

Downey's male "Iron Man 2" co-stars seemed to be having a nice time at the premiere, too. Samuel L. Jackson happily greeted Don Cheadle, while Mickey Rourke, Garry Shandling, Sam Rockwell, and Clark Gregg gathered for a giant cast picture in front of a statue of the action hero.

Lots of other famous faces turned out for the premiere, including Sylvester Stallone, Kevin James, Michelle Monaghan, Adrien Brody, Jennifer Grey, Dane Cook and Hugh Hefner, the man-of-the-moment as he had earlier in the day kicked in the $900,000 needed to save the iconic Hollywood sign perched in the hills just above the theater.

There Kareena got to know more about Kunal and felt impressed with his talented side. And our thoughtful actress went on to suggest him to join her in ‘Golmaal 3’. She even said to have recommended Kunal to Golmaal director Rohit Shetty, who in turn seems to have given a serious thought to the idea.

Hmmm, we don’t know what’s true; but one thing is sure Kareena surely knows how to win hearts and… family.

Freida Pinto to play Greek Priestess

Indian Beauty in her Hollywood duty Freida Pinto is flying high.. After bagging a role in Woody Allen's film, the actress is set to portray a Greek priestess in ‘War of the Gods’.

Phaedra joins Theseus to prevent the cataclysmic war from erupting.

The film will be produced by Gianni Nunnari of Hollywood Gang Prods, Mark Canton of Atmosphere Entertainment and Relativity topper Ryan Kavanaugh. Nunnari and Canton partnered on 2007's '300', which starred Gerard Butler in the lead.

Lata Mangeshkar to croon for Zeenat after 25 years

The queens are getting together after 25 years. The golden voice of Bollywood nightingale Lata Mangeshkar will again feel the ears with her melody as she croons for the yesteryears glam queen Zeenat Aman.

Lata Mangeshkar had lent her melodious voice for Zeenat in her most memorable songs in ‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram’, ‘The Great Gambler’, ‘Hare Rama Hare Krishna’ etc.

The last time she sang for Zeenat was way back in back in 1985 in the film, ‘Yaadon ki Kasam’.

After 25 years, Lata will croon the actress very popular “Aap Jaisa Koi’ from ‘Qurbani’ in Sanjay Sharma’s ‘Dunno Y... Na Jaane Kyun’. The movie also unites Zeenat with her co-star Kabir Bedi after 38 years.

Karan Johar dons the grease paint

He did it before, he has done it again! B-town’s hot filmmaker Karan Johar earlier had faced the camera in several popular films and now it is heard that he has tried the ‘special appearance’ formula yet again.

KJo said to have been requested by director Milap Zaveri to do a cameo role for his film ‘Jaane Kahaan Se Aayi Hai’. The film stars Ritesh Deshmukh, Jacqueline Fernandez, Ruslaan Mumtaz, Vishal Malhotra, Sonal Sehgal and others. Here Ruslan plays a superstar and the production team wanted a noted director to say some words of praise for him in the film. And there’s where Karan fits in…

Karan said to have finished the shot at Mehboob Studios, on the sets of Nikhil Advani’s ‘Patiala House’, when he was doing some interviews for ‘My Name Is Khan’.

Interestingly another biggie filmmaker, Farah Khan, have also done a small role in a sequence. Besides, our Stunt King Akshay Kumar features as himself in the course of the movie as well.

Wait there’s more… Beauties like Katrina Kaif, Deepika Padukone and more stars are expected to join the cameo bandwagon for this film! Producer Nikhil Advani said that he wants all these actors’ scenes as the film’s highlight.

Another ‘Om Shanti Om’ in the offing???

Arshad Warsi to get Rs. 3 crores for Golmaal 3?

He's in. He's out. He's finally....in! After the producers Ashthavinayak, apparently, agreed to pay him a whopping Rs. 3 crores to be part of the third segment of the ongoing Golmaal franchise, Arshad Warsi finally agreed to do the film.

After frantic negotiations the deal was finally cut on Monday. And yes, Arshad has condescended to be part of Golmaal 3.

His 3-crore rupee fee should be higher than every member of the cast barring Ajay Devgn. Even higher than Kareena Kapoor who has a 3-film deal with the producers. Arshad Warsi

Says a source, "Arshad after Ishqiya was adamant on his fee. The producers tried to convince him to take a much smaller fee arguing that his co-stars Shreyas Talpade, Tusshar Kapoor and Kunal Khemu (who replaces Sharman Joshi) were accepting a far smaller fee and if Arshad was paid 3 crores, the other actors would feel short-changed." Arshad stuck to his guns. Stories came out saying the actor, now hot at the box-office after Ishqiya, did not like the script of Golmaal 3.

Says Rohit, "We were really keen to have him in the film. And yes the price has been worked out between Arshad and the producers. So he's on."

Strangely though, even after Rohit confirmed Arshad's presence in Golmaal 3, Arshad was still in denial. Said the actor, "I am not sure yet. They've been after me for some time now. But I'm not able to make up my mind. I need to give time to my own production Hum Tum Aur Ghost. So I don't know how I'll manage the dates."

However, sources from Golmaal 3 insist that Arshad is in at a staggering fee (for a non-lead actor).

The other actor like Arshad who has started acting pricey after a hit (3 Idiots) is Sharman Joshi who was reportedly asking for Rs 2.5 crores. He turned down the third part of Golmaal through his secretary.

Says Rohit Shetty, "Even before the scripting of Golmaal 3, Sharman sent me a message through his secretary saying he had other plans. I immediately looked for a replacement and am very happy with Kunal Khemu. Any regrets about Sharman? None at all. In fact we met at the airport recently and there wasn't any mention of Golmaal 3."

With Ishqiya and 3 Idiots, Arshad Warsi and Sharman Joshi seem to be determined to move into the big league. Both actors are aiming to play the main lead.

Without naming anyone Rohit Shetty says, "There're lots of very talented actors out here who are fabulous side attractions but can never be the main course."

Neetu Chandra: An actress weight becomes national headline!

view NEETU CHANDRA picture gallery

Neetu Chandra is jumping from one film release to another. From RANN to her Tamil film THEERADHA VILAIYATTU PILLAI and now APARTMENT, the young lady is certainly keeping herself ultra busy. In the midst of all this running around, she is amused though when she comes across front page news of actresses putting on or loosing weight.

'I completely agree that as an actress, your hair, face and body should be in perfect shape all the time, especially when you are in public. However, we too are normal human beings yaar and can pick and loose weight', she laughs, 'However, the moment we put on little weight, it comes on the front page and becomes a 'national headline'. And then when we loose weight, it is attributed to liposuction. Can you believe that? Thankfully my body structure is just the same as it was two years back. Now tomorrow, if I turn skinny and start looking like Kareena, it could be because I have actually lost all the fat rather than going under the knife.'

Practical to the core, Neetu says that for an actress like her, it is the demand of the industry to be visible through appearances; photo shoots etc. than attributing it to professional compromise.

'Girls like me from no Bollywood background have to keep proving themselves'' Talent is a definite must; without that you can't go anywhere. But then you have to be visible as well and for that you have to showcase your versatility as a performer as well as your personality be known to the industry as well as audience', she smiles.

Sajid Nadiadwala: It's all about things going well at the script level

HOUSEFULL is inching closer to the release and just like it happens with every big film, this Sajid Nadiadwala produced multi starrer too can well be expected to be scrutinized closely for its budget. With the 'aam junta' also waking up to the box office figures and the hit/ flop/coverage/ blockbuster status of a film turning out to be everyday talk, there are always some interesting theories that start building up once the weekend numbers are out.

SAJID NADIADWALA
"Let me state the budget of the film on record here", Nadiadwala brings all speculations to rest, "HOUSEFULL is just a 40-45 crores film. It was never an expensive film to begin with. Yes, my last release KAMBAKKHT ISHQ was expensive but that was because it had so many foreign actors. I have been making films for 25 years now and I am not mad to invest in something from where recovery becomes an issue."

CHECK OUT: Sajid teams up with director Imtiaz Ali

With HOUSEFULL being pegged at 40 crores and a multi starrer to boast of, arriving at overall box office outcome of the film could well be anybody's guess.

"See, the super success of 3 IDIOTS has taught us that cost of making a film is not important at all; it's all about things going well at the script level", reflects Nadiadwala on the basics of film making, "At the end of the day everyone has his own style of making a film and add the kind of ingredients which he feels would be good enough to entice audiences. Sajid (Khan), the director of the film, had his own way of making HOUSEFUL and I am confident that it would turn out to be a good outing for everyone associated with it."

I’m uncomfortable kissing my heroines: Raghu

Raghu Mukherjee
Raghu Mukherjee
The hunky Raghu Mukherjee and the pretty Pooja Gandhi make a hot combo, which is why the two actors were signed by director Shiva Ganapathi for his latest as-yet-untitled directorial. The duo even shot for a sensual scene, just two days after the film went on the floors.

The only hitch was that Raghu didn’t want to kiss and tell in the sequence. We heard he refused outright to do a liplock sequence with Pooja.

When BT spoke to Raghu, the actor admitted to not wanting to be part of such an act. “I didn’t want to do it. I am not comfortable with kissing my heroines,” he confessed. Is it because of his married status? “No, I have a mental block against kissing on celluloid. I feel that something so private should be limited to the bedroom and not be put on display for public consumption,” he explains.

That’s something he’s always stood by. “Even when I just entered the film industry, I was very clear that I wouldn’t kiss or show my body off beyond what’s acceptable to me on screen. I spell it out in clear terms to all my directors just in case these elements are integral to the script. If that’s the case, I just tell them to carry on with another hero so that I don’t hamper their creative process,” says the actor.

In this film too, the director had discussed the scene with Raghu. “But I refused to do it. The camera never lies and if I’m not happy doing it, I’m sure it’ll show on screen. So, why spoil it for the film-maker?” says Raghu. As of now, the sequence has been snipped. “So, we’ll just show the romance more subtly now,” he smiles.

Actually, this year Ajay and Kajol are celebrating eleven years of marital bliss. As is the ritual, Ajay Devgan and Kajol spend the day together no matter wherever they are in this world in connection with their work.

Recently, when Ajay Devgan was returning to Mumbai from Madurai where he was shooting, the actor had a harrowing experience when his flight got delayed. What stressed him the most was that his anniversary day was being wasted and he was getting sad by the moment.

But, like a true lover, Ajay managed to reach home in time and spent the rest of the evening having some quality time with his spouse who was equally looking out for him to arrive. The celebrations finally took place much to his relief.

Ever since she made her debut with the film Slumdog Millionaire, Freida has been creating waves from the film's victory atFreida Pinto the Oscars, to her being signed on for Woody Allen's next. She is certainly going places. However, the latest news is that Freida has been signed on for yet another Hollywood film War of The Gods.

Lots of static!

The idea of a mystical assistance to succeed through life's inevitable disappointments is quite a fascinating one. Genie in the lamp, Fairy Godmothers or any wish-granting medium is an upshot of this peculiar human fantasy.

Karthik Calling Karthik [ Images ], too, stems from this deep-rooted desire.

Only our eponymous hero (Farhan Akhtar [ Images ]) isn't Aladdin, Cinderella or Bruce Nolan (of Almighty fame). A stereotypical weak geek at the receiving end of his scowling landlord (Vipin Sharma doing what he does best -- snap) and growling boss (Ram Kapoor with his snarling skills should sign up for Wolf Man), he's pretty much invisible for everyone else in the world, including, the leggy colleague in a pencil skirt (Deepika Padukone [ Images ]) to whom he's written a thousand plus unsent drafts of affection. Basically, he is Amol Palekar of Chhoti Si Baat, sans the goofy smile and mysterious past.

Dude seems to be in desperate need of Cinkara (Hamdard ka tonic, anyone?). But this is Farhan's production. And he's all about indelible charisma, hip aesthetics and urban wit. While the easygoing charm and wall decor is spot on, absence of crisp humour is conspicuously felt all through its loitering 16 reels.

Having said that, it's imperative to remember this is a Vijay Lalwani film. The first-time director is the strength or weakness behind its story, screenplay, dialogue and direction. If you view this with the expectations of a Farhan caper, you're doing both of them great disservice.

In other words, herbal tonic is out of question. Instead Karthik starts receiving strange calls from another Karthik who promises to help him attain everything that is rightly his -- power, money and love.

Desperate for comfort, Karthik doesn't need too much convincing before he takes up the seemingly unconditional offer. In no time, he's promoted from cabin to cubicle and single to boyfriend status.

No personality makeover in Hindi films is complete without a change of wardrobe. Even Sai Paranjape couldn't resist doing this to Farooq Shaikh in Chashme Buddoor. And so it's bye-bye Surinder Sahni and say-hello-to-Dil-Chahta-Hai.

Quickly enough, Lalwani runs out of ideas and till intermission KCK seems to be heading nowhere. Pace (editing by Aarti Bajaj [ Images ]) is one of the film's recurring problems. It's unnecessarily pensive and long-winded for its genre.

Even the romantic interactions are sluggish and uninspired. Although Farhan and Deepika are a cool couple to look at, you don't feel the vibe, mainly, because the conversations are just so 'meh'.

Their chemistry fares better against the breezy Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy [ Images ] composition, Hey Ya, choreographed effectively around their courtship and dating in office, malls, coffee shops and Khandala.

Things get dark and creepy in the second half when the Karthik-Karthik pact takes a beating. This is when Lalwani comes in his element and shows a flair for gritty thrillers without resorting to cheesy exaggeration or relying on excessive technique (camerawork: Sanu John Varughese, background score: Midival Punditz and Karsh Kale).

At this point, the on-going events on screen lead me to construct a sort of Dr Faustus meets The Dark Half brand of murkiness. If only Lalwani was as ambitious as the sinister alternatives in my head.

He, to my disappointment, opts for a rather squishy third act as opposed to the threatening climax I had anticipated. While Lalwani deserves a pat for working around an unusual, intriguing plot, he fails to sustain the same with substantial meat or layers.

Also, why does he hint out the suspense so early in the film? It's a crazy move and ruins any hope of the obligatory 'Whoa, I didn't see that coming.'

What is remarkable, however, is to witness is Farhan's evolution as an actor. Despite being a fairly visible face in the media, there's something unpredictable about his aura. And so far he's worked it to his advantage -- never letting the audience know what else he is capable of till he actually does.

Unlike Luck By Chance [ Images ] or Rock On!!, which saw him play self-assured characters, he is surprisingly believable as a fraught loser as well. He conveys the anxiety, simplicity and frailty of Karthik even when the script isn't doing it for him. Perhaps it's his innate filmmaker instinct.

Clearly, Deepika Padukone doesn't have it. And while she looks every bit of the unattainable dream Karthik envisions her to be, she doesn't hold a single scene on her own. Whether she's cautiously lighting a cigarette, robotically slapping the office jerk in Del Italia or scoffing at Karthik's confessions, all you really see is, well, nothing.

Films like Karthik Calling Karthik are all about winding up right. This one fails to make a connect. Pity, it could have been that all important call you've always been waiting for.
